I didn't know how else to contact you. I found your name in another blog while researching a sermon. You were described as "an atheist professor who studies religion." It seemed rather unfair to assume that this other person knew anything about your beliefs so I thought I would write you an ask: Is this a fair representation of your beliefs and your area of study? If so I am very thankful and would like to correspond with you more. The trouble for most pastors is that we don't know many people who are not followers of Christ who have made a serious study of our faith. One of the hardest things as a pastor is to get an accurate view of ourselves. Most people we speak with regularly are believers and therefore come from the same bias. Others that are willing to talk speak from another bias, but with little understanding of our faith. The series I am currently working on deals with the Kingdom of Heaven. If you have time I would love to hear your thoughts about this subject, or any other things your would feel relevant. Thank you for your consideration.

Well, good to hear that there were some highlights. I'm sure it's not as bad as I sometimes feel. And, I missed seeing Paul Djupe, who made the trip and doesn't always go to those. I think more recruitment of irregulars in sociology and political science would help soften the atmosphere and harden the thinking.

i actually looked around for you there, but had a hunch you might not be there. One part of the meetings that was particularly interesting to me was Putnam's presentation of some of what will be in his new forthcoming book. i mention this here because in one of the major points he was talking about there, the only thing i could think was that i sure hope he's read up on your stuff on switching from the GSS (particularly among "nones"). His story (largely) seemed to fit with what i've heard/seen in the data/analysis i've seen, so i was pleasantly surprised by the way he framed it. Could be a better book than the last (though i wasn't a *huge* fan of that one). fwiw.

This is disgusting. I hadn't heard about this until visiting your page.

People who buy this "shining city upon a hill" business and paint all others as unpatriotic have a hard time reconciling stuff like this.

I say we privatize even more vital and sensitive government functions, let companies like Prince's operate abroad not only with impunity but with a shared custody in the legitimate use of violence - and then wonder why we're losing the war for "hearts and minds." Oh, I almost forgot the part about proclaiming "Mission Accomplished."

Then we can vote for "change" only to have these contracts extended and let anal rape slide (and obviously waterboarding, too, since it got more attention) for the sake of moving forward instead of looking back - no big deal.

I guess if we'd only studied physics instead, we'd already know that the universe's entropy only ever increases. Though America seems to be in an alternate universe, there's no escaping this.

I agree that the police handled this one inappropriately though I would posit that Gates played the race card on speculation that he had been profiled. I think he yelled something like "Why?! Because I'm a black man in America?!" when asked to step outside or show his I.D. or something like that. In short, it seems that he immediately staked claim of the scenario's inherent capital victimaire. It is ironic because the sgt. involved was hand picked by a black superior to teach a class to his peers on racial profiling. This in itself would seem to suggest that Gates had to be equally out-of-line to warrant the escalation that occurred. I guess, though, you're allow to throw your weight around and have a chip on your shoulder when you're considered a "Harvard heavyweight" or are friends with the president.

What we're seeing right now is a bombardment of anti-atheist crap produced by journalist-whores funded by Templeton and other far right wing foundations. The one I link to was the third such screed this week, notably two of them were targeting "alternative" media outlets like Huffpo and Alternet. It's a war of ideals to denigrate the infidels and make certain that the Taliban reigns supreme. After all, you can't be moral, good, or worthwhile unless you believe in some big bad ass gods ready to throw down some whoop ass and torture people throughout eternity....

This is an interesting post.

We also cannot forget that ultra-conservative or fundamentalist religious groups often view their worldview and way-of-life as having been sanctioned by God and perceive of it as being under attack.

This has a set of geo-political implications ranging from a disparate view of foreign relations with other groups to war mandates (like in the case of George Bush's "war of ideals" and for "hearts and minds").

Many of the atheists that I know have far more stringent sets of morals and - as you noted, are far more tolerant than the uber-religious in my life.

They often turn away from religion because of the hypocrisy of "believers." We often hear from them the argument that "more people have been killed in the name of God than for any other purpose." Although simplistic, it's compelling and thought-evoking, to say the least.
