The Iranian Redneck
The Iranian Redneck is the political commentary page of Professor Darren Sherkat, who studies religion and politics. Professor Sherkat had deep Iranian Redneck roots. His father was in the Mossadeq Youth, and was on a scholarship promoted by Mossadeq when the CIA kidnapped overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran and imprisoned and killed Mossadeq. Sherkat’s mother is a good-old Oklahoma fundamentalist redneck! Mom’s family helped found what is now the Assembly of God, the largest white Pentecostal denomination in the US. It doesn’t matter which side of the spectrum you’re talking shit about, I’m calling bullshit.

I didn’t know how else to contact you. I found your name in another blog while researching a sermon. You were described as “an atheist professor who studies religion.” It seemed rather unfair to assume that this other person knew anything about your beliefs so I thought I would write you an ask: Is this a fair representation of your beliefs and your area of study? If so I am very thankful and would like to correspond with you more. The trouble for most pastors is that we don’t know many people who are not followers of Christ who have made a serious study of our faith. One of the hardest things as a pastor is to get an accurate view of ourselves. Most people we speak with regularly are believers and therefore come from the same bias. Others that are willing to talk speak from another bias, but with little understanding of our faith. The series I am currently working on deals with the Kingdom of Heaven. If you have time I would love to hear your thoughts about this subject, or any other things your would feel relevant. Thank you for your consideration.
